Abakanowicz Magdalena

A sculptress.
She was born in 1930 in Falenty near Warsaw where she still lives and works. She is one of the best-known Polish artists in the world. She studied between 1950-54 in the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Just after graduation she took up painting – she made monumental compositions with gouache on cardboard and canvas. Her first important individual achievement were spatial fabric, in fact soft sculpting forms, which came into existence in the 1960s and were named after the artist as “abakans”. She made further units of work usually from pieces of coarse burlap, sewed up, lengthened, bonded together with synthetic resin.
