Tchórzewski Jerzy

A painter and graphic designer
He was born on the 24th of April 1928 in Siedlce, died on the 25th of December 1999 in Warsaw. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow between 1946-51. During his studies he was affiliated with the artists of the Cracow Group and since 1957 he was one of the members and co-founders of this organization. Since 1959 he also cooperated with the international Phases movement, gathering artists of surrealistic orientation. He made his debut at the First Exhibition of Modern Art in Cracow in 1948/49. After his graduation he moved to Warsaw where in 1954 he started working at the Academy of Fine Arts. He ran painting atelier at the Faculty of Graphic Design. His early figurative paintings are closer to surrealism. In the 1950s he leaned more towards abstraction, often referring to space cataclysms.
