Berdyszak Jan

A sculptor , painter, graphic artist, theatre stage designer, art theoretician.
He was born in 1934 in Zawory near Książ Wielkopolski. Between 1952-1958 he studied at the Sculpture Department of the State College of Fine Arts in Poznań (now Fine Arts Academy), where he is a lecturer since 1965. The main subject of his works of art and artistic experiments is space – as a background, complement, merging. Since 1960s he created painting series, often concentrating on the motive of circle and ellipsis. Since 1965 he introduced real space into a painting by cutting out a piece of canvas. His artistically-spatial compositions are often accompanied by graphics (plaster and wood engraving). Since 1990 he created a series entitled Passe-par-tout. Parallel to the cycles of paintings the artist made sculpture projects. The activity of the artist is always accompanied with a philosophical and theoretical reflection.
